My student told me, “I don’t want to just _________ for the rest of my life.”

I have students who feel stuck in their lives, doing the same job for decades. First things first. There is absolutely nothing bad or wrong with cleaning, babysitting, driving with rideshare apps, or whatever it is that you may feel stuck in for a living. Please, please don’t think I’m suggesting for one second that helping others through a job like delivering food is not a respectful job.

I was working with a GED student who told me that she felt embarrassed that all she could do was clean houses because she had no other options. I would argue–I’m sure you’re shocked–that she had lots of options, but the point was that she wanted to earn her GED. So we did just that.

We met for two online coaching sessions to discuss what was holding her back from taking the test. We went through a quick diagnostic test to see where she was at academically. I discovered that she was planning on taking the test in the wrong language (more on that later), and I had her sign up for the first section. She took it and passed! Now, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll pass on your first attempt (more on that later, too), but she was brave enough to try it, and it worked out.

So, what is your dream? What is your ideal job or career? I’d love to help you figure out your next step.

Best of luck on your GED journey!
